Gritty filly Passion Cantata posted another city win with a terrific performance to win the Happy 70thBirthday Tont Oreb Handicap (1200m) at Belmont Park.

The three-year-old scored at the venue two starts back on September 5 before turning in an excellent performance when second in Saturday company on September 15.

Craig Staples partnered Passion Cantata again at Belmont.

Staples sent Passion Cantata straight to the front in the early stages of the $45,000 event, allowing the daughter of Oratorio to stride freely until he asked her for her best effort soon after straightening.

Passion Cantata slipped two lengths clear passing the 200 metres before fighting hard to hold off the backmarkers, scoring her third win from seven starts by a half-length.

Passion Cantata’s trainer Paul Jordan praised his charge’s bravery in the latter stages of the race.

“The only time she’s been unplaced was in the Magic Millions and she got galloped on that day,” Jordan said.
“I was going to run her against the colts in the Belgravia Stakes next week but we pulled the right rein by starting today.

“I think she will get a mile in the Champion Fillies.  Her dam is by Scenic and she’s a real fighter”

Jordan paid $80,000 for Passion Cantata at the 2011 Perth Magic Millions yearling sale.

Passion Cantata’s latest success took her prizemoney tally to more than $120,000.
